Intoxication

feed your head

Intoxication can cause both comfort and stress. The two can be linked: Healing the stress expires the comfort.

Comfort always expires after sleep. Max. 1 comfort per source.

Every time you experience a drug’s effects, roll its hook die.

On a 1, gain a level of tolerance to that drug. For every level of tolerance, you need an additional dose (a redose) to get the drug’s effect. You can opt out of gaining tolerance; if you do, you must gain one of the drug’s dependency issues next levelup.

If you abstain from a drug for 1 session, you can buy off 1 level of tolerance at levelup: Spend XP equal to 10 times the tolerance level to be removed.

Drugs marked with † interact. When combining them, suffer the redose effect of the added drug even if it was your first dose.

alcohol
Brews and distillates.
  • * Getting drunk: To enjoy alcohol’s effects, you must be drunk. Drunkenness constitutes drinks exceeding your Immunity. 1 drink over Immunity = drunk. Every additional drink is a redose.

coquelicot
Syrupy lion poppy resin. Stronger than laudanum. Smoked in long saddle-back pipes, vaporous and pink. Sold by the pipeful, one dab at a time, in “cot houses” named both for “the ‘cot” and the beds prepared for stupefied smokers. Prejudicially associated with ragmen but enjoyed by all. Called the candy of poets, the stuff of dreams, and the bane of moral society.

coqueliquiche
Chewy pink confection of coquelicot, sugar, and mastic gum. Sold as small cakes. Numbing, soothing. Elicits salivation, for which its users are dubbed “pinkspitters.” Popular among Southern ragmen. Unwholesome for the teeth and gums.

ephedrine
Powerful stimulant derived from a scrubby wasteland shrub. Produces wakefulness, clarity of mind, and a wide-eyed, euphoric sense of strength and efficacy. Rough on the heart but appetizing to the brain.

laudanum
Bitter coquelicot tincture. A common medicinal taken for virtually every ailment. Sold in elaborate bottles at any corner store.

lotus petal
Plump white petals stolen from the forbidden lotus atoll. Broad as a hand. Fat and waxen as succulent leaves. Crisp, cloying, and saccharine. Satisfying, blissful, nourishing. Full of an enchanting nectar that permanently alters the eater’s mind, instilling an unending hunger satiable only by the petal.

nitreux
Delicious, sweet, cool, nitrous oxide straight from the balloon. Recently popularized in Empereaux and beyond, purveyed by attractive “ballon belles” filling gasses mischievous and innocent alike from painted canisters, their popularity buoyed by an incidental helium craze.

poplit
Patented marigold-yellow gas distributed in single-hit “cracker” bulbs. A mere sniff wracks the nerves and bloodstream, producing a single irresistible jounce of paroxysmal strength.

Pepperelle
Aromatic herb smoked Coastwide, largely in cigarettes. Paradoxically invigorating and relaxing. Infested with eggs that hatch into doxbells when combusted.
  • ** Chain smoking: 1 smoke every danger round (10 mins.) While you have one lit: -1 malus and immunity to tiredness and hunger. +1 Smog stress per hour of chain smoking.

Praf
AKA Blood of the Dust God. Exotic powder bright as red agate. Imported from foreign Jerosia by mysterious traffickers. Typically insufflated. Sold as “bumps” in thin reed straws or by the gram. A gram is 12 bumps. Stupendously, euphorically stimulating. Induces intense, gregarious energy that fades in a too-soon pang of disappointment, demanding more.

Yerba Roja
Wispy red buds sugared in yellow crystals. Smokeable many ways. Languorous, heady. A dose causes 1 speed penalty and 1 comfort. A gram constitutes 4 doses. Cheaper in the South, where the herb grows natively.
